Belinda Fox | FAULT/LINES

1 April - 25 May 2020
Overview

Belinda Fox is a multidiscipline artist, working in printmaking, painting, ceramics, and sculpture. Her work, which is often described, as beautifully rendered and technically accomplished. It investigates fragility and imbalance in an increasingly unstable world. She has won numerous awards for her printmaking and drawing including the Paul Guest Drawing Prize, the Burnie Print Prize and the Silk Cut award for lino- cuts. She has received funding grants to undertake artist in residencies in USA, Greece, Singapore, Darwin, Perth, Sydney and Tasmania and she has participated in major survey exhibitions of contemporary Australian printmaking in the UK, China and Australian Regional galleries.

"Wherever you choose to pause and contemplate, you will find a depth in Belinda Fox’s work which leaves nothing out. There are elements of tradition, the contemporary, her identity as artist and mother, the strangeness of dwelling as a foreigner in a foreign land, the news cycle of crises of humanity and the environment. Through it all is a keen awareness, a very Australian feet in the dirt sensibility, a humanistic grounding within landscape." -Lisa McKimmie, 2020

FAULT/LINES Recent Paintings by Belinda Fox

EXHIBITION ON VIEW APRIL 1 - MAY 31, 2020

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March XX, 2020—Maybaum Gallery is pleased to present its second solo show with Australian born, Netherlands-based artist, Belinda Fox. Fault/Lines presents a selection of the artist’s recent multimedia work, which blurs the boundaries between painting, printmaking and drawing and presents a vision of a deeply beautiful world that is paradoxically in environmental and existential crisis.

Belinda Fox was initially trained as a printmaker in Australia in the 1990s, but diverged from her career trajectory in the early 2000s to incorporate additional mediums into her work. This new direction in the artist’s practice unfolded as she began to travel extensively throughout the world in Asia and in Europe for residencies and career opportunities. Printmaking and travel are often cited as central in the discussion of Fox’s artwork—her compositions harness the discipline and tension of printmaking with the balance of gestural interpretation and her subject matter’s multicultural reference points (lotus flowers, birds, traditional Asian Landscape painting) ground the conceptual and emotional pursuit of her work.

Presenting the beauty of a world in ecological crisis is both a paradoxical and extremely honest pursuit. Fault/Lines references the literal geological split of a physical terrain, but also nods to the term’s secondary meaning—a divisive issue or difference of opinion. Immediately contextualizing the works in the language of tension or impending disaster, Fault/Lines allows the viewer to identify the polarized, the binary and the gray area of modern life and the state of the natural world hinted at in these images.

Many of the works in Fault/Lines like The Space Between (pictured above) combine abstracted natural forms rendered in watercolor, pen and ink melded together with stark and dramatic woodcuts. The stark contrasts juxtapose light with dark and graphic simplicity with intricate composition. Elements of these very different planes within one single artwork leak into each other suggesting the interdependence of seemingly different systems and just how interconnected we all are to each other and to the natural world.
